How rating and ranks work
Everyone starts at 1200. Your rating never falls below 100.
Rating moves only in quick match, the ranked game: Play online, then Find a game. Practice games against the computer, games with a friend and games on one device are for fun: they never change your rating.
- You need an account. A ranked game changes a rating only when you are signed in. If your opponent isn’t signed in, nobody’s rating moves.
- Winning against a higher rating earns more. Ratings move with the standard Elo formula (K = 32): at equal ratings the winner gains 16 and the loser drops 16.
- If nobody is waiting, quick match plays a computer under a player name, and that game counts too. The computer starts at Normal, gets harder when you keep winning and easier when you keep losing.
- A game has to be a real game. It must last at least 8 moves (12 against the computer), or it changes nothing. Leaving a ranked game for good loses it.
- No farming. You can earn rating from the same opponent at most 3 times a day.
- The server checks every move of a ranked game against the rules, so a result can’t be made up.
